Photos: Hope's 2nd annual Mutt Gala entertained while raising funds

Annual celebration of local dogs helps raise funds for Lions guide dog program

It was an afternoon of doggy fashion and tricks during Hope's second Mutt Gala on May 24.

Laughter and smiles were abundant as 20 dogs, of all shapes and sizes, put their best paw forward as they postured and performed for the Fraser Hope Lodge residents, and other attendees. Hosted by the Hope Lions Club, who partnered with Hope Secondary School's Leadership students to help run the event, the gala was a fundraiser to help the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in providing guide dogs, free of charge, to Canadians who need them.

"Thank you Hope! What a huge success and we were so excited to host this at the Fraser Hope Lodge so all of the residents could come out and enjoy the dogs," said Lenora Poulin, the school's leadership teacher, via social media. "We had 20 dogs, perfect weather, and our hearts are full! Thank you Hope Lions Club. And thank you to the amazing staff at the Lodge for making it all possible."

During the event, people could buy refreshments and food, such as pop, hot dogs, and popcorn, from the Lions Club which they enjoyed while watching the dogs. There was also prize baskets with treats for both the dogs and their human friends. The categories were Best Costume, Best Trick, and Best Owner/Dog Duo.

Hope hosted its first Mutt Gala back in 2023 thanks to organizing Lions Club members Sara Burleigh and Debbie Zervini. However, the event has been taking place across Canada for over 20 years ago, with the Pet Valu Walk for Guide Dogs being a fixture in many communities.

Between 2023 to 2024, over $1.3 million was raised during the walk.

This year, the Lions Foundation is hoping to raise $1.6 million. As of May 26, $818,646 have been donated.

The funds will go towards training guide dogs and matching them with people who need them. This includes training for seeing, hearing, service, seizure response, autism assistance, diabetic alert, and facility support guide dogs.
