The newest crash data from ICBC shows data highlights some of Chilliwack's worst intersections and how they've changed over the past five years.
Notably, the intersection of Luckakuck Way and Vedder Road was the city's worst in 2024, with at least 89 crashes.
While the Sardis-area intersection has hovered near the top of the annual rankings for the last five years, it was the first time it's had the highest volume of crashes. The other two intersections that saw the most crashes last year were Promontory Road at Vedder and Watson roads with 75, and the Evans roundabout with 69.
Promontory at Vedder and Watson has consistently been on of the top-three worst intersections in Chilliwack for the past five years. There were 83 crashes reported there in 2023, 73 in 2022, and 63 in 2021. It was the city's top crash site in 2020, with 64 crashes.
The number of crashes there could be rising due to the steady residential growth in the area. The city completed a road-rehabilitation project in 2021 that added more lanes and altered the traffic flow. The changes include a set-back, left-turning lane on Promontory Road that is marked with white crosshatches, intended to alert drivers that they need to clear the intersection. The set-back lane allows room for traffic to turn left off Vedder Road.
As for the Evans roundabout, crash numbers there are going down from previous Chilliwack high of 89 in 2022 and 85 in 2021. That location saw just 60 crashes in 2020.
Those three high-volume intersections each see more than double the crashes of the intersections that follow, including Cheam Avenue at Hodgins Avenue and Yale, with 37 crashes.
As for pedestrian-involved incidents, Mary Street and Hodgins Avenue in Chilliwack remains one of the most dangerous intersections, but with somewhat smaller numbers. Eight incidents have been reported to ICBC from that intersection in the past five years, with two of them in 2024. There were also two pedestrian incidents at Mary Street and Bernard Avenue last year, which is an intersection that hadn't shown up in this set of data in the previous four years.
ICBC's report, shared publicly via Tableau, notes that some numbers from 2020 and 2021 would have been affected by the pandemic. The data is also not a complete or exact list of crashes, and some smaller communities including Popkum and Cultus Lake are listed separately.
