In order to keep meeting their goal of supporting residents in growing their own food, no matter the available space, the Hope Food Collective offered free container gardens to residents on May 12.
The Hope Food Collective partnered with the Yale First Nation Greenhouse to make the baskets, which were intended to act as a mini garden for those who wanted them.
"Baskets were claimed in less than 24 hours," said Darla Dickinson, a member of Hope Food Collective, in an email to The Hope Standard. "Our goal was to empower the community with knowledge and skills in container gardening and in doing so make a small impact on our food security."
The baskets were available at the Hope Food Centre parking lot. Basket containers were made from food grade buckets left over from the November 2021 floods. All of the plants were sourced from Yale First Nation to support their food security program.
Dickinson noted that there is also a potential private donation that could bring another set of baskets to the community in the future.
