A Surrey high school English teacher accused of using vulgar language and telling two students about another engaging in "self-harm" has been disciplined by the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.
So far this year the commissioner has ordered 43 investigations, 11 consent resolution agreements have been reached, two citations have been issued and one hearing decision was issued.
In this case, Hussan Ali Riasat taught at an undisclosed Surrey high school and according to a government document in May 2021 told two students about an unnamed student engaging in self-harm, and messaging a student about "insanely childish and rude" behaviour. The document states he also told a student another student had a "bitchy attitude."
The commissioner hear Riasat administrated an Instagram account linked to the school's film club and at one point blocked five students' access to the account. On Oct. 5, 2023 the school district issued him a discipline letter, suspended him for five days without pay and ordered him to complete a "boundaries" course.
According to a district report to the commissioner, on May 21, 2024 there was an incident in a hallway where he told a student "F--k you, bitch," and gave some students the finger as he walked away.
On June 17, 2024, Riasat resigned from the district effective June 19, 2024. On July 5, 2023 the school district had issued him a "letter of direction" for flicking part of a lanyard at two students, hitting one in the "chin or face area."
A agreement was entered under Section 53 of the Teachers Act in which he admitted certain accusations made against him constituted professional misconduct and agreed to a two-day suspension of his certificate.
"A breach by Riasat of any term in this Agreement may constitute professional misconduct
which may be the subject of separate discipline proceedings," the agreement reads.
"Riasat acknowledges that he voluntarily entered into this Agreement after being advised of his right to obtain independent legal advice, and that he fully understands the terms and conditions set out in this Agreement," it further states.
