Nathan Ngieng is the new superintendent for the Abbotsford School District.
The Abbotsford board of education made the announcement on Friday (July 11) and he will begin serving in the role starting on July 15.
He replaces the departing Sean Nosek, who left the position after two years on July 2.
Ngieng originally joined the district in August 2017 as director of learning support services. He then served as assistant superintendent from 2021 to 2023, before being appointed deputy superintendent in July 2023.
“I’m honoured to step into this role and excited to continue working alongside our students, families, and the outstanding team of staff in Abbotsford,” he stated. “Together, we will build on the district’s strong foundation to create inclusive, engaging learning experiences that help every learner thrive.”
Ngieng completed his doctor of education at Western University in 2023 and he also holds a master of education from the University of Calgary and a diploma in guidance studies, as well as a bachelor of education and a bachelor of human kinetics – all from UBC.
He has also served as president of the B.C. Council of Administrators of Inclusive Support in Education and contributed to the provincial advisory board for
the Youth Development Instrument, the EdCan Network and the Canadian Centre for Inclusion and Citizenship.
“Since his early days in Abbotsford, Dr. Ngieng has demonstrated a deep understanding of the needs of our district and a steadfast commitment to inclusive and innovative education,” stated Shirley Wilson, chair of the Abbotsford board of education. “His leadership, integrity, and vision for public education will continue to serve our students, staff, and community well. His educational leadership and vision, which align with our strategic plan, were strong factors in his appointment.”
Ngieng had been operating as the acting superintendent since Nosek's departure. He has also been operating as acting secretary-treasurer after Ray Velestuk stepped away in April.
