The University of the Fraser Valley is warning its students to remain extra vigilant on Monday after a bear sighting occurred at the Abbotsford campus.
The alert was issued on July 7, following reports of students spotting a small black bear wandering around the south side of the campus.
By the time the alert was sent out, the bear had been confirmed to have relocated to a neighbouring property, but students are still encouraged to be very aware of their surroundings when walking on or near campus.
UFV also reminded students and staff that if they spot the bear, it should not be approached. Instead, the individual should contact UFV security by calling 1-855-239-7654.
This is following what had been a fairly slow start to the year for black bear activity, with the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service reporting that it had received 3,242 calls about black bears in the first five months of this year.
This is significantly fewer than in the same time period of 2024, which had 3,796 calls, following 3,314 in 2023.
