The Rotary Club of Ashcroft-Cache Creek honoured its 2024 Citizens of the Year at a reception at the Ashcroft HUB on May 22.

More than three dozen family and friends, along with Rotary Club members, gathered to recognize the five individuals who were selected from among those nominated by area residents. The sweet-and-savoury refreshments were catered by Fusions Restaurant in Ashcroft.

Donna Middleton of Cache Creek was nominated by Joris Ekering, and he, Cache Creek councillor Sue Peters, and Cache Creek resident Wendy Coomber spoke of Middleton’s many behind-the-scenes efforts and her work with a variety of community organizations.

Rick Coulsen of Ashcroft was nominated by Angela Bandelli, who spoke of his quiet work cleaning up the downtown area of Ashcroft and keeping it clear of litter and cigarette butts. She pointed out that his work largely goes unnoticed, as it’s carried out early in the morning before many people are about, but both she and Ashcroft mayor Barbara Roden noted that this unseen work and dedication to the community makes it a better place for everyone.

Mark Greenberg and Giri Fournier of Venables Valley were nominated by Sara Sens, who could not be there in person but provided a speech (for Fournier) and a poem (for Greenberg) to be read out on her behalf. Both pieces — along with words from TNRD Area “I” director Tricia Thorpe — noted the contributions Greenberg and Fournier make to their community, highlighting their efforts during and since last year’s Shetland Creek wildfire.

Eight-year-old Austyn Harkness, nominated by Barbara Roden, was praised for his efforts in working with both the Village of Cache Creek and the Ministry of Transportation to get a sign on Highway 1 just east of Cache Creek put in place, warning motorists to slow down for pedestrians walking along the shoulder. Peters also highlighted Austyn’s many contributions to events in the community, where he is always ready to help out.
