Surrey Para swimmer breaks another record — twice — at Victoria trials

Paralympian "stoked" with race times at 6-day swimming trials

Surrey's Sebastian Massabie continues to make waves in the pool.

The Paralympian broke another record — twice in the same day — at the six-day Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria Monday (June 9).

Massabie, who trains with the South Surrey-based Pacific Sea Wolves at Grandview Aquatic Centre, broke the S5 Canadian record for the second time in a day to win the multi-class 50-m butterfly, a Swimming Canada release noted.

The Paralympic champion — who won gold in Paris last year in the S4 50-m freestyle, smashing a world record in the process — swam 36.59 in the morning preliminaries, then lowered it to 35.84 in the final.

“I’m really happy with that race,” said Massabie.

“I was really focusing on making sure that I made that time. It was a really great moment.”

His coach, Pacific Sea Wolve's Jy Lawrence, was impressed with Massabie's performance and speed.

"He's stoke! That puts him under the consideration time for Worlds this summer," she said in Victoria Tuesday (June 10).

"He did his race really well."

Massabie still had another event to swim in Tuesday, then another on Wednesday (June 11), Lawrence said.

The six-day trials, which run through Thursday, have attracted more than 700 swimmers Victoria, where they are competing for selection to teams competing at four major international competitions: the World Aquatics Championships July 26 – Aug. 3 in Singapore, the 2025 FISU Games (Summer Universiade) July 17 – 23 in Berlin, the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships Aug. 19 – 24 in Otopeni, Romania, and the World Para Swimming Championships Sept. 21–27 in Singapore.
