South Surrey's Red Serge Gala revisits the '80s

31st annual affair raises funds for Semiahmoo Community Safety Society

Tickets to the the 2025 Red Serge Gala are officially up for grabs – and that means those leg warmers and shoulder pads stashed at the back of closets everywhere may soon relive their former glory.

Set for Oct. 11 at Northview Golf & Country Club (6857 168 St.), the annual affair is a themed fundraiser for the Semiahmoo Community Safety Society.

This year's soirée – 'Back to the 80s' – will mark the 31st time it has been organized, all for the benefit of safety initiatives on the Semiahmoo Peninsula.

Funds raised support everything from volunteer community policing programs such as Speed Watch and Bike Patrol, to community safety groups and initiatives such as the Semiahmoo Peninsula Marine Rescue Society, local dry grad programs and the White Rock Firefighters Charity Association.

As well, gala proceeds fund the Cliff Annable Scholarship for Leadership, Community Safety and Volunteerism – an annual $1,500 award to students from Earl Marriott, Elgin Park, Semiahmoo, Grandview Heights and St. John Paul II Academy.

Annable was a well-known Peninsula businessman whose extensive involvement in the community over the years included being a founding member of the safety society. The first scholarships in his name were presented in 2020, the year following his death.

The gala includes silent and live auctions, a buffet dinner and dancing till 11 p.m.

As always, guests are encouraged to get in the spirit for the occasion. Those at a loss for attire ideas may want to consider – if shoulder pads and leg warmers don't appeal – something in velvet or velour, or perhaps bleached jeans and a tight T-shirt. Don't forget bold colours, and don't be shy if the urge to mix patterns arises.
