National Range Day took aim on firearms safety

Visitors tried their hand at sharpshooting, archery at annual open house

On Saturday June 7, the Alberni Valley Fish and Game Club on Sportsman Road had an open house that saw many newcomers learn safe firearms handling skills and bow and arrow safety. Some participated in sharpshooting competitions as well. National Range Day was a family friendly day and many took advantage of it.

There are 2.3 million licensed gun owners in Canada, according to statistics provided by local organizers. The fish and game club can be the perfect place to learn the correct and safe use of not only firearms but also bows and arrows.

Club members were pleased to see that one of the first- time shooters hit the clay pigeon more than once.

Also celebrating National Range Day were members of the West Coast Rangers Black Powder Club. Like a step back in time, there were demonstrations of skills that were vital to that period. There was learning how to safely load and fire a black powder musket, and try hawk and knife throwing — all in a fun and safe way.

If you missed the open houses but are curious about these skills and activities, contact the Alberni Fish & Game Club by phone at 250-731-3233 or check out their website at albernifgc.ca.
