Skip’s Run
The annual Skip’s Charity Run takes place on Sunday, June 4 starting at 9 a.m. at the Ashcroft HUB. Participants can walk, run, or roll routes of 2.5km, 5km, or 10km, with finishers receiving a one-of-a-kind collector’s medal.
You can register online at https://raceroster.com/, or in person at the HUB during office hours, during package pick-up (2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 3), or on race day from 8 to 8:30 a.m.
Cache Creek Farmers’ and Flea Market
The Cache Creek market is back for another season, with vendors located at the junction of Highways 1 and 97C (beside Chum’s Restaurant). The market runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday, so come down and check out the wide variety of arts, crafts, plants, food, and more on offer.
Fun fair
The annual Desert Sands Community School fun fair will be taking place on Thursday, June 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. Bring the family along for this fun, free event which features inflatables, entertainment, concessions, raffles, games, and much more!
The Equality Project
The Project has a number of friends who would love an opportunity to grow their own flowers, fruits, and vegetables; so if anyone has any leftover bedding plants, soil, or planters, please consider dropping them off on Mondays or Tuesdays at the organization’s headquarters on Stage Road in Cache Creek.
The Project is also looking for volunteers to help out in their kitchen on Mondays and Tuesdays. Anyone interested should call (250) 457-6485.
McAbee Fossil Beds presentation
Dr. Bruce Archibald, a world-renowned paleo-entomologist, will be holding a series of public talks about the McAbee Fossil Beds in the area in late June.
Archibald has studied the site for many years, and recently made worldwide headlines when he announced that a previously unknown species of wasp had been found at the site. He will be talking about the history and importance of the site, and what we can learn from it.
A group of local volunteers has been working, over the past year, to start development of the McAbee site, which was acquired by the province in 2012 and has been closed to the public ever since. A member of the working group will be on hand at Archibald’s lectures to talk about the group’s progress, and discuss plans to reopen the site.
Archibald will be at the Cache Creek Community Hall on Tuesday, June 20 (7 to 9 p.m.); at the Ashcroft HUB on Wednesday, June 21 (7 to 9 p.m.); and at the Kamloops Library on Thursday, June 22 (6:30 to 8:30 p.m.). There is no charge for any of the events, which are sponsored by the Village of Cache Creek, the Village of Ashcroft, and Tourism Kamloops.
Façade improvement
The Village of Ashcroft is, for a third year, offering the Northern Development Initiative Trust’s Façade Improvement Program, which provides financial assistance for local business owners who would like to improve their business’s façade.
Interested businesses are invited to complete—with the assistance of Village staff—a simple application package that details their plans for façade improvement. Qualifying businesses are able to receive 50 per cent of eligible improvement costs up to $5,000.
An addition to the program this year is that glass mosaics attached to businesses are eligible expenses under the program. Mosaics are increasingly becoming a popular form of art around Ashcroft, and are drawing visitors to the town; they even feature in a recently-published walking tour of the Village, and are sure to draw attention to businesses.

Vice principal of inclusion named
School District No. 74 (Gold Trail) has announced that Mrs. Nicky Minnabarriet has accepted the position of vice principal for inclusion as of August 1, 2017. She has been a part of the Gold Trail team since 2008, and for the last seven years has supported students, staff, and families regarding inclusive practices.
For the last two years she has been the district’s inclusion specialist teacher, and is a strong advocate for the meaningful and thoughtful inclusion of all students into every learning environment.
Minnaberriet believes that the key to inclusion is thoughtful planning, to ensure each student has an access point into learning, and that every learner can be included in a purposeful and meaningful way.
