The Sardis Falcons boy’s hockey team has officially captured history.
The Falcons were in Abbotsford on Tuesday afternoon for the inaugural Fraser Valley High School Hockey Championship taking on the Mission Roadrunners.
The boys fought off a late effort from the Roadrunners to take a 2-1 victory and with it, the first-ever Fraser Valley championship banner.
Following a scoreless opening frame, Sardis’ Riley Green broke the deadlock giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the second period. Joel Schmidt then added some insurance with seven minutes to go in the third period, giving Sardis what appeared to be a firm grasp on the title.
But with their goalie pulled and the extra attacker, the Roadrunners found the back of the net to cut the lead in half with just 55 seconds remaining.
The Falcons stood their ground though, fighting off an onslaught of attacks inside the final minute to crown themselves as champions.
“We played a hard-fought, fast, team-first game,” said Sardis head coach Jeff Grenier. “I’m feeling very grateful we ended up on the winning side after overtime and shootout losses in previous years.”
“It was a great way to end several of these young players’ high-school hockey journeys having had so many of them in the academy since Grade 9. To finish with a big win and memory for them is special.”
It was the cherry on top of what was a brilliant season for the Falcons hockey team who finished with a regular season record of 5-1 while boasting a goal differential of +26.
Their only loss came at the hands of Mission earlier in the season.
