Williams Lake improves accessibility from city to Scout Island trail network

A new pedestrian bridge, crosswalk and trail connection provide access to and from downtown

The city of Williams Lake opened a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge and crosswalk just before the holiday break.

A new 140-foot bridge over Williams Creek and a connected crosswalk across Mackenzie Avenue, complete with rectangular flashing push-button activated lights were opened for use Dec. 22, 2023.

The bridge provides an alternative crossing point for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility-device users to connect to the Scout Island trail network as well as providing an alternative to the Highway 20 bridge over the creek. A dirt pathway passes underneath the Highway 20 vehicle bridge and connects to the pedestrian crossing.

Opening of the bridge and crosswalk were initially delayed while waiting for an electrical part to activate the light system.

The project was funded with the assistance of a $550,000 grant through the province’s Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program.

No signage directs pedestrian or bicycle traffic to the new infrastructure yet, but people were already using the bridge over the holidays.
