The suspect in a random stabbing that occurred Tuesday (June 24) in Abbotsford has been located and charged.
According to the provincial court database, Robert Terrence Matthews, 46, has been charged with aggravated assault and breaching his probation.
Charges were sworn Friday (June 27) in Abbotsford provincial court.
Police reported on Wednesday (June 25) that a 20-year-old man had been waiting at a bus stop in the 32700 block of South Fraser Way at around 6:15 p.m. the night before when he was stabbed from behind, resulting in injuries that were not life-threatening.
The suspect ran away, and police released a photo of him the following day, asking for the public's help in identifying him.
Police said the suspect and victim did not know each other.
Matthews remains in custody, next appearing in court on July 29 to set a date for his bail hearing.
According to the provincial court database, he has an extensive criminal record with numerous prior convictions – dating back to 2004 – for offences such as using a forged document, resisting a peace officer, theft, assault, breaching his conditions, uttering threats, assault causing bodily harm, robbery and assaulting a peace officer.
Matthews still has a robbery charge before the courts from April 2023 in Abbotsford, to which he has pleaded guilty and has yet to be sentenced.
