It was extra cool and rainy in Chilliwack over the weekend breaking some longstanding weather records.

A record rainfall on Friday, Aug. 23 brought 41.2 millimetres of rain, according to Roger Pannett, Chilliwack's volunteer weather observer for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The previous record for that date was set in 1968 when 22.4 mm fell.

"The rainfall continues," Pannett said, reporting the rather soggy stats over the weekend.

By Saturday night, a total of 60.7 mm of rain had fallen over a 36-hour period.

That brought the monthly total up to a whopping 78 mm of rain for August. Keep in mind an average August in Chilliwack, would see 64.8 mm.

The volunteer storm watcher noted that the meteorologists had "excellent forecasting" heading into the weekend's rainstorms.

Another record-breaker was the low maximum temperature on Saturday of only 14.9 C, which was more than eight degrees below normal.

The last time it was cool enough on a late summer day in August like that was in 1927 when the high for the day only reached 16.7 C.

Temperatures have been averaging more than three degrees above normal for August, Pannett said.
