Sicamous council directed staff to price out a wheelchair swing, such as this one in Parksville, for possible installation at a local park next year.

People in wheelchairs could be wheels up next year as Sicamous council prices out an accessible swing.

At the June 12 meeting, council received a letter from Yannick Marcoz who saw a wheelchair swing while visiting Nanaimo and asked about possibly installing one locally.

"People in wheelchairs can not go on normal swings. This makes them not be able to have the fun they deserve. Especially kids in wheelchairs," he wrote. "They should not be able to have less fun than other kids who have the gift of being able to walk."

District staff bundles all correspondence together on the agenda, with councillors able to address anything they want to highlight or take action on. Coun. Gord Bushell spoke to Marcoz's letter, not wanting it to get lost in the shuffle.

"I've always wanted a wheelchair ramp into the lake, and we've talked about seeing if we could get Twin [Anchors] to design one... that you could move if you had to, but yeah, the swing would be cool too," he said, bringing it to operations manager Darrell Symbaluk's attention.

While nothing will happen with it this year, Symbaluk said he'll keep it mind for 2025.

"We do have identified, next year, a playground to look at upgrading in the Finlayson area, and maybe I can bring an option to council at that point for what an extra swing would cost."
