Spring has sprung and the bears are back, with locals advised of the latest sighting in Malakwa.
In a social media post, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) warned of a female grizzly bear and her two cubs being seen in the North Fork Wild Park near the Last Spike. Though everyone knows you don't mess with a mama bear of any kind, the CSRD issued the cautionary reminder to ensure everyone's safety, both human and animal.
"We kindly ask you to be cautious when entering the park," the post states. "This situation is unfolding, and the CSRD will keep you updated as more information becomes available."
The post added a link to wildsafebc.com/learn/play with information on safely cohabiting with wildlife. On the site, WildSafeBC advises outdoor enthusiasts to plan ahead before heading out, know the wildlife's timetable, take wildsafe training and carry bear spray at all times.
It also explained that certain sports require extra vigilance as the risk of a surprise encounter is increased due to the person's speed and lack of sound, and said that wildlife avoidance is better than dealing with an animal directly.
"For the most part, wildlife wants nothing to do with humans," WildSafeBC states. "But there are times when wildlife may react defensively to your presence, and in the very rare instance view you as a menu item."
