With bears coming out of hibernation, the City of Salmon Arm is reminding residents of the rules around the curbside collection program to help keep people and wildlife safe.

With hungry bears emerging from hibernation, the city is reminding residents of the rules around the curbside collection program.

The City of Salmon Arm says it has been receiving calls and reports regarding hungry bears searching for food.

To help keep neighbourhoods safe, on Friday, May 2, the city shared via social media a reminder to "all residents to follow curbside collection bylaw requirements."

City bylaw 4281 specifies garbage and bins should be on the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, and not the night before. The city explains this is "essential to minimize attracting wildlife into residential areas, keep residents safe and protect wildlife from harm."

Residents are to ensure bins containing food waste, and yard waste bags, at the curb are securely closed.

When waste bins aren't out for collection, they are to be kept securely in a garage, shed or area inaccessible to wildlife.

Not following these rules may result in a $150 fine per occurrence.

"Let’s work together to reduce attractants and protect both our community and local wildlife," said the city.
