The District of North Saanich has updated its fireworks bylaw aimed at bolstering protection for sensitive ecosystems and local wildlife, bringing the region in line with best practices.
The bylaw, adopted earlier this month, amends the existing 2007 fireworks regulation to include crucial new restrictions.
The key amendments introduce a 200-metre buffer zone around designated environmentally sensitive areas, effectively prohibiting the use of fireworks within and around these fragile habitats.
Protected areas now include Chalet Creek, Tsehum (Shoal) Harbour, Roberts Bay, Tseycum Creek, Ten-Ten Creek, Coals Bay, and KELSET (Reay Creek).
The updated bylaw also mandates coordination with Nav Canada before using fireworks in proximity to Victoria International Airport (YYJ), addressing potential aviation safety concerns. Nav Canada handles YYJ’s air navigation system.
In addition to these restrictions, residents planning family fireworks displays will now require a permit issued by the district. These permits will be granted only for specific locations deemed safe and suitable, ensuring responsible use of fireworks.
The district emphasizes the updated bylaw mirrors that of the Town of Sidney, reflecting a regional commitment to prioritizing the natural environment and safeguarding wildlife, particularly during the critical bird nesting season.
