Greater Victoria will host two cultural events this weekend, celebrating the region’s African and Latin American communities with music, food and family-friendly programming.
AfriCa Fest Victoria, now in its 12th year, begins Thursday night (June 26) in Centennial Square and runs through Sunday, June 29. The festival will celebrate African and Afro-descendant cultures through live performances, food, dance and workshops.
The opening night will feature a fashion show titled West Coast: Blessings from Lagos to Victoria, beginning at 7 p.m., preceded by a traditional welcome at 5 p.m.
New to the festival is a weekend brunch featuring African cuisine, served from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Other highlights include drumming workshops, a multicultural food village, artisan market and community booth.
On Sunday (June 29), the Vancouver Island Hispanic Network Society will host its annual Dia de Campo Hispano at Saanich’s Beckwith Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The picnic-style event will include music, dance performances, food trucks and games for all ages.
Organizers describe it as a chance to connect with the community and celebrate Latin American culture in a family-friendly setting.
Both events are free and open to the public.
