Former Langley MLA Mary Polak has a new job – overseeing the non-profit that oversees seniors homes.
She will head the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA), which represents more than 500 B.C. seniors living, wellness and care providers. Polak's new role as chief executive officer (CEO) is effective July 2.
The association is a non-profit society that represents continuing care organizations in the province, and works with health authorities, provincial government, professional groups, and others.
“After an extensive search, the board of directors is proud to welcome Mary as our new CEO,” said board president Marc Kinna. “What stood out in our search was her deep commitment to working collaboratively with all sides to find the best outcomes for seniors in our province.”
She was first elected as a Liberal MLA in 2005 after several years as a Surrey School District trustee and chairperson.
She served as MLA for Langley for almost 15 years and held several key cabinet portfolios, including minister of health, minister of transportation and infrastructure, and minister of environment, among others.
Years after her time in politics, Polak remains an active voice, regularly appearing on political panels and talk shows. She recently helped new provincial MLAs by teaching at MLA School.
Since 2021, Polak has worked as a strategic advisor with a national public affairs firm.
Polak lives in Langley with her adult daughter and spending time with her 96-year-old father. He's a resident at Langley Lodge, one of BCCPA’s member sites.
“I’m honoured to join BCCPA,” Polak said. “With an aging population, there’s never been a more important time to support those who provide care and housing for B.C. seniors. I look forward to advancing the important advocacy work that the association does for the sector.”
Polak succeeds outgoing CEO Terry Lake, who will support the transition until mid-July.
