An Indigenous speaker will be in town marking International Women’s Day for what the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce is calling a "powerful and inspiring" event.
Angela Sterritt, an award-winning investigative journalist, author and motivational speaker, will talk about overcoming adversity, breaking stereotypes, and creating change and relationships in Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities on Friday, March 7.
She will share experiences of her young life, and use her gifts to empower others – particularly women in business.
"Angela has strong local ties to Chilliwack, having spent part of her youth here, making this event even more special for our community."
The luncheon event is called 'The Courage to Rise: The Power of One Story' and it's at the The'i:tseliya Health Centre (7256 Chilliwack River Rd.) starting at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be at noon, and the keynote speech is at 1 p.m. with a book signing and networking to follow.
She wrote her first book Unbroken which was published in 2023. It is part-memoir and part-investigation into the murders and disappearances of Indigenous women and girls. In 2024, Sterritt announced her second book Breakable, which will investigate how racism and colonialism cultivate harmful behaviours in men and how Indigenous men and communities are breaking cycles of unhealthy notions of masculinity. It will be published in the spring of 2026.
"Prepare for an afternoon of reflection and inspiration as Angela takes you on a journey that’s sure to spark thought, courage, and a renewed sense of determination to pave your own path."
The event is presented by Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.
