Cello duo will share music and stories from their time playing around the world

Two internationally accomplished Nanaimo cellists will share music and stories from their time performing around the world.

Alexandra Lee and Amy Laing are Cellovista and will perform a show titled 'The Travelling Cello' at St. Andrew’s United Church this week. 

“From classical to contemporary, from the concert hall to collaborations with major artists, their experiences shape an evening that blends storytelling, intimacy and world-class musicianship,” noted a news release for the show.

Lee is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s music performance program and is now based in Nanaimo. She is an award-winning chamber musician and a passionate advocate for musical outreach. She is currently assistant principal cellist with the Vancouver Island Symphony and she teaches at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. 

Laing is originally from Nanaimo and earned a bachelor of music from the HARID Conservatory in Florida and a master of music from the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has held key orchestra positions, including principal cellist of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. She performances with major Canadian ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra and Canadian Opera Company. 

Laing has recorded with artists including Stevie Wonder, Blue Rodeo and Sarah Slean. She also teaches at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music and performs with the Victoria Symphony, the V.I. Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony and Victoria Baroque. 

The show will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for children and students. They can be purchased from the Port Theatre box office or at the door.
