LETTER: White Rock 'hub' should be at city hall site

Proposed uptown location lacks advantages of the existing city hall site, writer says

The proposed site of the uptown community hub in White Rock wouldn't be as advantageous as the current city hall site, a retired architect writes.

Editor,

I am a retired architect and have served on the White Rock advisory design panel, and I heartily agree with the need for a new building in one place to accommodate the many services required by the city and its residents.

It seems to me that a “hub” would suggest city hall’s present location. The area of the existing site offers an opportunity to design a complex that would accommodate parking and pedestrian traffic as well a much-needed civic square.

The structure or structures could have a distinctive presence reflecting the importance of their function as the centre of city’s governance and services.

The suggested alternative site next to the Playhouse would, in my view, offer none of opportunities of the existing site.

Respectfully,

Paul Rust (MAIBC retired)
