LETTER: Citizens of White Rock, make your voice heard on hub plans

Major decision for city's long-term future should be in residents' hands, this writer says

The site of the planned uptown White Rock community hub isn't winning favour with this writer.

Editor,

Citizens of White Rock, now is the time to make your voices heard.

The slim majority of the city council that wants the uptown hub needs to hear from you, particularly if you oppose their proposal. They are presenting it as the project for White Rock’s future, as though there are no other alternatives. It is either their way or the highway.

Well, there are alternatives, as given in the consultants’ report. A scaled-down hub could be made where the current civic buildings are situated. We would have communal green space, not crammed vertical living.

So now is the time to contact city hall and let our councillors know how you feel about this slim majority’s proposal. Write emails, write letters, make phone calls, attend meetings and let those four councillors know exactly how you feel about the future of our city.

They don’t have the right to take away our green spaces! They can’t just bulldoze a major change in our city without a referendum detailing all the alternative possible solutions.

We can’t leave this major, major decision for our long-term future in the hands of just four people. And by the way, the consultants’ report didn’t favour the uptown site as the best choice. It was the city staff that presented their own preferences to council, and who elected them? Did the councillors actually read the whole consultants’ report or just the staff’s presentation.

This process needs to slow down! Write, call, lobby! The more voices responding, the louder the message will be received.
