Editor,
I would like to follow up on the “White Rock opts for Uptown Community Hub” article in the Peace Arch News, wherein White Rock City mayor and council have voted (4-3) on scenario 3A for the new city hall to be part of a community hub within a 12-storey condo building on Johnston Street.
In order to pay for the new community hub, some significant changes to the existing White Rock City Hall block bounded by Buena Vista Avenue, Fir Street, Pacific Avenue and Centre Street will be made. All of the property, except for the police station and fire hall, will be sold to developers who will be allowed to build two or more six-storey condo buildings along Buena Vista Avenue, Fir Street and Centre Avenue. These condo buildings will be double the height of all the other condos and buildings that are in this area. Changing the zoning to allow for the increased height on this property will drastically alter the character of this neighbourhood and also the increased density will cause traffic and parking issues.
Furthermore, another city parcel of land at Oxford Street and Buena Vista, the water works yard property, will be sold with construction of a six-storey condo building on that site.
The sale of both these properties will have a very significant impact on these communities and residents in these areas should be aware of the proposed changes.
