South Surrey-White Rock MP Ernie Klassen has been named parliamentary secretary to the minister of fisheries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new parliamentary secretary team focused on building Canada strong Thursday (June 5).
"Canadians elected this new government with a mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States, to build a stronger economy, to bring down costs, and to keep our communities safe," a statement from Carney's office said, adding that parliamentary secretaries will support their respective cabinet ministers and secretaries of state to deliver on this mandate.
"I’m honoured to share that I’ve been appointed parliamentary secretary to the minister of fisheries, the Honourable Joanne Thompson," Klassen said in an email from Ottawa. "As the Member of Parliament for South Surrey-White Rock, I remain committed to supporting and advocating the sustainability and prosperity of Canada’s fisheries."
Klassen said fisheries are vital to our local economy and environment, and central to "our cultural heritage and food security."
"I am committed to push for policies that protect fish stocks, support harvesters, and promote healthy oceans for generations to come," Klassen said.
"In this new role, I look forward to working alongside minister Thompson, colleagues across government, Indigenous leaders, and communities across the country to make progress. There’s a lot of work ahead—and I’m ready to get started."
Thompson is MP for St. John's East, Newfoundland and Labrador.
