White Rock will hold a byelection later this year to replace a vacancy left by Coun. Ernie Klassen, who was elected MP for South Surrey-White Rock in the April 28 federal election.

A byelection is coming to the seaside city of White Rock.

The city has formally accepted the resignation of White Rock Coun. Ernie Klassen, after he was elected as Member of Parliament for South Surrey-White Rock with the Liberal Party of Canada.

A report outlining the next steps for holding a municipal byelection will be presented to council at the Monday, June 9 meeting, a city release noted.

The byelection is anticipated to take place in the fall.

According to the rules that govern municipal byelections, a local government must appoint a chief election officer for the byelection as soon as practicable after a vacancy occurs.

The chief election officer must set the date for general voting for a Saturday no later than 80 days after they were appointed by council.
