Alexis Creek area sees 51 mm of rain in 36 hours

Juri Agapow said they have gone from extreme drought to flooding

The Hanceville and Alexis Creek areas had some record rainfalls Wednesday, June 26, and Thursday, June 27.

"We had 51 mm in 36 hours between Wednesday morning and Thursday evening in Hanceville and over 60 mm at our Sparrowhawk Ranch North of Alexis Creek," said Juri Agapow of Hanceville Cattle Company Friday.

He said the heavy rain caused the 4600 road to be washed out at km 13.5, which is a major impact to them as they cannot drive between their various places up there - Sparrowhawk Ranch at km11.5, Spain Lake Ranch at km 35 and Handy Meadow Ranch at km 51) in order to move their haying equipment around.

"It's crazy," he said. "We've gone from one drought extreme last year to another flooding extreme this year."

The Agapows have lived there for eight years and have never had so much rain in such a short period of time, he said.

Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement Thursday morning predicting between 30 mm and 50 mm of rain in a 24-hour period.
