People can see Indigenous fashion, hear cultural music, and taste traditional foods at an upcoming gala in Chilliwack.
Chillcouture: Shxwthit’awkw’ 2025 returns to Shxwhá:y Village Cultural Centre on Saturday, June 21, marking National Indigenous Peoples Day.
"We are so pleased to return in 2025 with a host of new fashion, art, music and Indigenous culture," said organizer Berris Karden of Chillsounds.
Fashion designers include Teresa Walker (Ab-Original Threadz), Nikki LaRock (LaRock Dezines), and hair-braiding stylists Leanne Greens and Kassidy LaRock. Wearing the designs on the catwalk that night will be 25 to 30 Indigenous models.
There's also a jam session with four traditional singers and drummers, and an Iron Man competition with prizes. Both of these events are audience participative.
With food trucks and other vendors on site, people can taste a selection of Indigenous delicacies.
The event is also a fundraiser benefitting the Chillcouture scholarship fund for a local high-school student.
