More than 40 teens from Surrey will be receiving up to $44,000 each for their post-secondary careers.
Awarded to students who have shown resilience in facing financial struggles and work to positively change their lives, 43 students from Surrey have been chosen for the Beedie Luminaries scholarship program.
Hailing from 16 different schools in Surrey, each recipient will receive $11,000 each year for either two-year or four-year programs they choose to enrol in.
The 43 winners can choose to use their scholarships at one of 26 post-secondaries in B.C., with opportunities also available for a peer program, a student success program, mentorship opportunities and chances for paid summer internships.
Winners for the prize include Daymen Holland from Clayton Heights Secondary, Fatima Juma, Arshpreet Singh and Ronith Verma from Enver Creek, Dominic Duong from Frank Hurt, Rayan Natsheh from Fraser Heights, Rosie Lin from Grandview Heights, Eugene Bahia, Muzamela Delawar, Zainab Gangis, Lianna Mohammad Latif and Aaron Valderama from Guildford Park Secondary.
Then there's Success Orimoloye and Yobsara Teklemariam from Johnston Heights, Delina Asgedom, Yamna Durbi, Vivian Kha, Claudine Li and Zaib Sharif from École Kwantlen Park Secondary, Mehar Atwal from L.A. Matheson, Farezeh Alhamza from Lord Tweedsmuir, Iman Abdulwahid from North Surrey Secondary, Keiara Connell and Alyshaan Muhammad from École Panorama Ridge Secondary, Zahra Alsh, Talib Chohan, Ahlam Hamary and Mohamad Obeid from Queen Elizabeth.
Princess Margaret is seeing a whopping 13 students as recipients, consisting of Mursib Abbasi, Ammar Ahmed, Maira Asghar, Haardik Garg, Mais Ghazal, Christian Mariano, Hashir Mehmood, Ali Naqib, Estephania Rubalcaba Castillo, Fatima Saeed, Mobin Sanjarani, Gursahay Singh and Sara Tarar.
And finally, Midian Mengstu from Invergarry Adult Education was also chosen along with SAIL student Bareerah Nadeem.
