30+ Surrey teens chosen for STEAM summer university program

Surrey School District Education Centre. More than 30 teens from the Surrey school district have been chosen for a prestigious Shad Canada STEAM program this summer.

More than 30 teens from Surrey will be spending their summers at university campuses across the country to be immersed in a STEAM and entrepreneurship program.

Chosen from eight different high schools in Surrey, the 34 local teens from Grades 10 and 11 have been selected among 1,700 across Canada for the prestigious program from Shad Canada. The program allows the high school students to live on campus, attend seminars, labs and workshops, and learn from experts and instructors to engage in STEAM – or science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The 34 students were chosen based on their academic performance, well-roundedness, creativity, innovation and extra-curricular involvement, reads a release from Surrey Schools.

Selected winners include David Duan, Oliver Guo and Amanda Liu from Elgin Park Secondary, while Gloria Xiong was chosen from Fleetwood Park Secondary. Also chosen were Fraser Heights Secondary students Nelson Hua, Januki Kankanamge, George Qian, Cody Sun and Laura Wang, along with Grandview Heights Secondary students Sonia Chen, Jason Chung, Haley Dokgo, Hailun Feng, Loui Kang, Charles Wang and Mike Xu.

From Guildford Park Secondary are Rawan Almasri, Gurtej Boparai, Dumebj Okoye and Amy Tran, with Logan Lu, Tanish Shah and Zuen Wang from École Kwantlen Park Secondary, Hiya Sharma from Queen Elizabeth Secondary and finally, Aarush Aggarwal, Manik Chandok, Isabella Ho, Edward Jin, Leo Liu, Isabella Shang, Daniel Sun, Amy Wu, Bernie Xu and Crina Zhu from Semiahmoo Secondary.
