Cereal boxes crashed like dominoes the other day when a Fleetwood school supported a Cloverdale-based charity.
Coast Meridian Elementary School held “Cereal Domino Day” June 6 to support the Storehouse Community Hub Society (the new name of the Cloverdale Community Kitchen) and Storehouse’s food bank program.
Makenna Guidish, a summer intern with Storehouse, told the Cloverdale Reporter via email that every kid at Coast Meridian was asked to bring a box of cereal to school that could be set up across the parking lot, knocked down, and donated.
“Once they were all lined up, the first box was tipped over to create an amazing domino effect,” Guidish said. “All the boxes would then be donated to Storehouse to assist their food programs. This was made possible by the staff, parent helpers, and of course the students, who cheered in excitement as the cereal dominos fell.”
She added the event brought a lot of smiles to the student’s faces and will make a big impact on those using the Storehouse Regional Food Bank.
Geri Pope, a teacher at Coast Meridian, said students at the school were excited about the domino run and they really enjoyed watching the boxes tumble. Pope thought the event went well and thanked all the volunteers who helped put it on.
“Originally, we had planned to have the run go directly outside the school building, but on the morning of the event we decided to have it run along the staff parking lot,” Pope explained. “This allowed for ‘stadium seating’ so that all students could see the entire domino run without obstruction.”
After the toppling of the boxes, students and staff rounded up the cereal. In the end, Coast Meridian Elementary School donated more than 300 boxes to Storehouse Regional Food Bank.
“It was heartwarming to see everyone come together—not just for a fun event, but for a cause that really matters,” said Ryan Fisher, manager of volunteers for Storehouse. “The enthusiasm from the students and the help from the parents made it a truly unforgettable day. It’s amazing how a small act like donating a cereal box can make a big difference.”
Staff at Coast Meridian are planning to make “Cereal Domino Day” an annual event.
"We are very excited about the potential of continuing this partnership with Coast Meridian Elementary in the coming years, leading it to an annual year-end celebration with a strong element of community engagement," said Frankie Allen, development and event manager for Storehouse.
The Storehouse Regional Food Bank serves families in Surrey, Langley, and White Rock.
Storehouse Community Hub Society is the new not-for-profit umbrella guiding the Cloverdale Community Kitchen and five other services—most of which the Kitchen had managed. Storehouse now oversees the Kitchen, Storehouse Regional Food Bank (renamed from Fraser Valley Regional Food Bank), Cloverdale Christmas Hampers, Storehouse Mobile Meals, Storehouse Outreach (new), and Storehouse Clothing Cupboard (also new).
