During the last day of May, Diabetes Canada will be accepting gently used clothing and small household items in Nanaimo.
The national donation drive takes place Saturday, May 31, when residents are encouraged bring their goods to the nearest local donation centre.
The donations are then delivered to Value Village stores, which pays Diabetes Canada based on the volume of goods delivered. Over the past four decades the clothing drive has raised over $200 million for Diabetes Canada, which then uses the funds to support diabetes research, diabetes programs and youth camps for children living with diabetes.
In a press release, Diabetes Canada stated that since 1985, when the drive was started in Vancouver, more than three billion pounds of items have been collected.
“We’re proud of the incredible impact this program has had in directly supporting Canadians affected by diabetes,” said Sean Shannon, CEO and president of National Diabetes Trust, in a press release. “This milestone is a celebration of Canada’s generosity, environmental responsibility and the dedication of our staff.”
Diabetes Canada’s clothing collection centre in Nanaimo is located at 4166 Departure Bay Rd., with the drive taking place between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Additionally, people can use the donation boxes scattered throughout the community.
