The May long weekend is a great time to de-clutter homes and cottages while helping nearly 12 million Canadians with pre-diabetes and diabetes.
Diabetes Canada is asking Nanaimo residents to drive up and donate gently used clothing and small household items this Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Diabetes Canada Clothing Collection Centre, 4166 Departure Bay Rd.
Donations help send children with type one diabetes to D-Camps, fund diabetes research and keep items out of landfills.
Last year during the Drive Up and Donate initiative, Canadians donated more than 94,000 pounds of textiles and household items and since Diabetes Canada started Drive Up and Donate events in 2020, nearly 500,000 pounds of donations have been collected and diverted from landfills across Canada. This year Diabetes Canada hopes to reach its collection goal of 1 million pounds.
“With so many people willing to de-clutter and generously donate their gently used items to Diabetes Canada, there are now more locations and opportunities to participate … These nationwide clothing donation collection events are an easy and great way to give back to your community and help reduce textiles and small household items going to landfills,” said Sean Shannon, president and CEO of National Diabetes Trust, in a press release.
For those unable to participate this weekend, Diabetes Canada will be hosting the Drive Up and Donate event every weekend throughout the summer, the release noted.
