Workplaces continue to get safer each year in B.C. thanks to the efforts of safety-oriented companies like APEX Food Source, which had its CEO named as a finalist in this year's Safety Pinnacle Awards.
Created as a way to celebrate manufacturing companies making huge advancements in health and safety, this annual ceremony hands out awards in a variety of categories.
The event hosts, Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC, recently announced the finalists for the Soaring Eagle Leadership Award, which it explained is given to executives who demonstrate a health and safety-oriented leadership style.
Included among the finalists was Gil Goldstein, who has been the CEO of Abbotsford's APEX Food Source since late 2023.
Goldstein will have to wait until June 12 to see if he is the grand winner or not, which is when the Safety Pinnacle Awards will take place at the Great Canadian Casino in Vancouver.
According to WorkSafeBC, putting such an emphasis on health and safety has a real positive impact on the province's workforce, with the number of workplace injuries steadily declining in recent years.
The most recent report shows that there was a total of 143,856 workplace injuries reported in B.C. in 2023, which is a sharp drop from the 150,369 injuries reported in 2022. Workplace deaths also decreased during this time, dropping from 181 in 2022 to 175 in 2023.
"When we recognize and reward achievements in health and safety leadership and innovation with our teams – and local business community – we strengthen culture, morale, and commitment," said the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC.
