The Abbotsford Regional Hospital acquired new technology that allows it to better detect cervical cancer.

Detecting cervical cancer will now be easier than ever before at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital thanks to the acquisition of some new advanced medical equipment.

Dr. Lakhbir K. Jassal explained that the hospital's general day care unit was recently able to purchase a colposcope with the help of a donation from the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.

"This advanced medical equipment will significantly enhance the hospital’s ability to provide comprehensive gynecological care and early detection of cervical cancer," Jassal said.

Jassal said this new technology is so effective because it functions as a microscope with a light source, which provides physicians with the ability to identify and examine abnormalities associated with cancer.

Being able to better identify cervical cancer is extremely important, especially in B.C., where the Canadian Cancer Society estimated that more than 200 people were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2024.
