Evander Kane is coming home.
The Vancouver Canucks have acquired the 34-year-old from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for the Ottawa Senators fourth round draft pick in 2025, a selection the Canucks picked up after trading Vasily Podkolzin to Edmonton last summer.
Before the deal was announced by the teams, Kane posted on social media, thanking Edmonton for this time with the team and expressed his excitement to play for his hometown team.
Kane was born and raised in Vancouver and was drafted by the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Vancouver Giants 19th overall in the 2005 Bantam Draft. He made his WHL debut in late 2006 and went onto win the Memorial Cup with the Giants as a 15-year-old that year.
In three seasons and 156 games (regular season and playoffs), Kane posted 155 points and went on to get selected in the first round, fourth overall of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.
Over his 16-year NHL career, Kane has played for Atlanta, Winnipeg, Buffalo, San Jose, and Edmonton. He's played 930 regular season games, scoring 326 goals and adding 291 assists. He also has 55 points in 97 career playoff games.
While Kane has had a good NHL career, it has come with controversy and injuries. He didn't play a regular season game in the 2024-25 season and hasn't played a full 82-game season in his career. He's been suspended multiple times in his career for on-ice infractions, however his biggest suspension was 21 games for submitted a fake COVID-19 vaccine card to the league. Additionally, he's been the subject of many off-ice issues including being sued for alleged assaults, alleged gambling debts, filing for bankruptcy, allegedly betting on NHL games, and accusations of domestic violence and sexual assault from his ex-wife.
