The mainland versus the island – a story as old as time – is unfolding right now as the annual BC Rugby Senior Women’s Blue vs. Gold Series continues, including dozens of the province's most talented female rugby stars.
This three-game competition is a chance for these athletes to showcase their skills and keep themselves at peak performance ahead of national team selections taking place later in the year.
The stakes are significantly higher this time around, with these rugby stars hoping to have their name included as part of the roster for the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, which takes place in England this August.
On one side of the series is the Lower Mainland gold team, led by head coach Demi Stamatakis from Capilano RFC and assistant coach Matt Fraser from the Vancouver Thunderbirds.
They're going up against the Vancouver Island blue team, which includes UVic Vikes head coach Brittany Waters and assistant coach Olly Winser.
In the first of three games, it was a largely one-sided performance from the Vancouver Island squad as they marched to a 62-7 victory.
The mainland team will have their chance at redemption on Saturday, May 31, as the second series match comes to Victoria. The final of the three matches will once again return to Delta on June 7.
