Victoria Report: A new year for continued success

Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart looks back on 2023 and ahead to the New Year

MLA Jackie Tegart

Despite being in Opposition, 2023 was a year of action for BC United. From the first week of the fall legislative session, we were able to see the results of our work holding government to account.

After we spent most of the year raising serious concerns about the public consumption of illicit drugs as a consequence of their reckless decriminalization experiment, the NDP finally acknowledged the problem and implemented legislation to restrict their use in public places. [Editor’s note: On Dec. 29, 2023 the BC Supreme Court granted a temporary injunction to the Harm Reduction Nurses Association, suspending the coming into force of BC’s Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act until March 31, 2024.]

Coming out of the worst wildfire season in the province’s history, I was proud to be able to debate the NDP’s Emergency and Disaster Management Act, questioning why it does not include key measures that would deliver significant aid to evacuees.

While the government’s legislation ended up being a disappointment, our BC United Caucus proposed our own bold wildfire policy, so areas like the Fraser-Nicola can be better supported throughout disasters.

We’ve taken a strong stance on affordability in our province, with a Kevin Falcon-led BC United promising to implement common sense measures that will put money back into your wallets. These include eliminating the provincial fuel tax, removing the carbon tax on home heating, and canceling the NDP’s “Cost BC” scheme that will shrink our economy by $28 billion over the next 10 years.

It’s clear the NDP has failed British Columbians who are struggling more than ever to afford groceries, find a roof over their heads, access medical care, and feel safe in their community. But United, we can fix it.

My door remains open for any concerns you may have throughout this year. BC United remains steadfast in ensuring we address the key issues that matter to you and we’re going to keep up the pressure on David Eby right through to election day in October of 2024.

I wish you all a Happy New Year filled with love, joy, and success.

Jackie Tegart is the BC United MLA for Fraser-Nicola.
