Letter: Duncan tax increase galling

Families are having a hard time paying housing and grocery costs
letters

Well the inevitable property tax bills for the City of Duncan have arrived and no surprise Duncan city council is once again gouging the city taxpayers with a massive 11.1 per cent tax increase. But wait, Duncan city council says they’ve reduced your taxes from 11.3 per cent to 11.1 per cent a whole two tenths of one per cent!

I guess we should all be dancing in the streets at this reduction which is going to save the average taxpayer $8 on a $4,000 tax bill. This reduction is a total farce and a pathetic attempt to gaslight the beleaguered Duncan taxpayers.

Families are having a hard time paying housing and grocery costs and Mayor Staples and Duncan city council have the gall to point to a two tenths of one per cent discount as “savings”.

Perhaps it’s time for Mayor Staples and city council to stop using taxpayers as their personal piggy bank to fund their nonsensical and ideology driven projects such as divided bike lanes, tree planting and scramble crosswalks.

A responsible mayor and city council should not be raising taxes at quadruple the current inflation rate.
