LETTER: A cautionary Vernon housing tale

Reader questions proposed Commonage housing project and its impact on local water supply

The 580 Commonage development sought public input Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

There's an old blues song from the 1920's about a boll weevil, a beetle that devastated the cotton industry.

The refrain is the boll weevil telling the farmer "gotta have a home."

While I am not for a nanosecond saying those in desperate need of housing are either insects nor invasive, it is as the real estate refrain goes about "location, location."

Building on the Commonage seems a no-brainer for the developers but for everyone who can see the facts about the costs of infrastructure and more importantly put that together with the concerns being raised by the Greater Vernon Water supply about future water security need to be balanced by those making the decisions, and ultimately those are the people of this valley.

One would have to be living in a dungeon to not see the lack of snow and rain we have had while the demand grows ever greater.

Yes, housing is critical but the costs in all their complexity must be understood.

Sincerely,

P. Findlay
