The local MLA paid tribute to a District of Kent hero during a recent legislative session in Victoria.
During the May 5 session of the Legislative Assembly, Fraser-Nicola MLA Tony Luck recognized the achievements of the late manager of Kent-Harrison Search and Rescue (KHSAR), Neil Brewer.
Brewer is the inaugural recipient of the Freedom of the District of Kent Award, the highest civilian honour bestowed by the Kent government. Brewer passed away in March, just weeks after receiving the honour.
"For 35 years, Neil Brewer stood as a pillar of strength and selfless service with the Kent-Harrison Search and Rescue team," Luck said. "He led with compassion and courage."
A Search and Rescue volunteer since 1990, Brewer personally responded to more than 600 search and rescue tasks. He was a long-time advocate for Search and Rescue across the province; he was instrumental in securing needed funding for KHSAR, which helped build their current headquarters in Agassiz. Brewer is also known across B.C. for his contributions to a province-wide communications system.
Luck said Brewer leaves behind a "legacy of mentorship, innovation and unwavering dedication."
"Neil has been described as a hero, a leader, a friend and indeed, he was all of that and more," Luck stated. "Neil Brewer gave of his time, his heart and his strength, and though he is no longer with us, his legacy of service will live on, not only in the lives he saved, but in the lives he inspired."
