With Canada Day just around the corner, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is asking residents not to ignite their own personal fireworks show.
Consumer fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted within City of Vernon boundaries, VFRS cautioned Friday, June 27.
“With prolonged drought conditions we’re currently experiencing, it’s important that everyone stays vigilant and makes fire-safe choices,” said deputy fire chief Brian Parsons. “We all have a role to play in helping reduce the risk of wildfires.”
The fire department offers some safe alternatives to fireworks to help celebrate Canada Day on Tuesday, July 1, including:
• Hosting an outdoor movie night;
• Using glow sticks or noise makers;
• Lighting battery-powered flameless candles;
• Enjoying a bylaw-compliant campfire where permitted.
Using or storing fireworks without a permit can lead to a fine of up to $300. Multiple fines can be issued for a single infraction.
"The city appreciates the community doing their part to keep Vernon safe from fire risk," the city said.
