It's a Canada Day weekend tradition, a tournament ball players look forward to all year long.
The Funtastic Slo-Pitch Tournament took over the DND Grounds in Vernon June 27 to 30, with teams dressing up and swinging for the fences for some fun on the diamonds and a chance at some prizes and bragging rights.
Vernon had two different co-ed tournaments playing out at the same time: a guaranteed four-game tournament and a guaranteed five-game tournament, sorted by ability.
Costumes were encouraged and rewarded; there are about 60 costumed teams each year.
Prizes were given out to the best-costumed teams, the most sportsmanlike teams and the teams that won their divisions.
"The tournament went off basically without a hitch," said Funtastic Society president Jamie Austin. "We had 170 teams, players and people were happy and really enjoyed themselves. Everyone had a blast."
There was more to enjoy than just softball at Funtastic, as a music festival livened up the grounds throughout the weekend, featuring local bands, country stars and tribute acts. Those playing in the tournament, as well as ticket-holders, could enjoy music between or even during the night games under the lights at the DND Grounds.
Local acts included The Dirt Road Kings, Sean Lightfoot Band, The Feels and the Young'Uns.
Country music star Nate Haller closed out the festivities on Saturday.
