All open burning, including campfires, will be prohibited within the City of Salmon Arm as of Friday.
The city is following the provincial Kamloops Fire Centre's lead with a prohibition of Category 1 campfires, beginning at noon on July 12. At that time, all open burning will be prohibited within the fire centre, along with fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, burn barrels/cages, chimneas and tiki or similar types of torches.
The Kamloops Fire Centre's prohibition applies to all public and private land not covered by local government bylaws for open burning. It has been the city's practice to institute bans on open burning in conjunction with the fire centre. The District of Sicamous and the Village of Chase are also following suit.
"We appreciate your cooperation in following this ban to ensure the safety of our community," said the city in a notice shared via social media.
Due to high temperatures and low precipitation, on Monday the city moved to Stage 2 water use restrictions, limiting water use for residents to a maximum of two hours on two designated days per week. For more information, visit salmonarm.ca/water-restrictions.
