A Chilliwack teacher who retired in 2021 will be unable to work again without facing a 10-year ban for inappropriate conduct. The B.C. Commission for Teacher Regulation disciplined Erik Rickard Leander Chadsey for actions that happened between 2017 and 2019 when he worked in the Chilliwack school district.

The conflict resolution agreement issued by the commission details a list of infractions by Chadsey, including the sharing of age-inappropriate stories or information with his students and using age-inappropriate language in discussions with them.

In one example, Chadsey showed students in one of his classes a video titled ‘How to Tell if You’re a Basic Bitch,’ which some students found demeaning towards women.

According to the commission, Chadsey would also ask his classes a question of the day.

“Two questions related to first kisses and breaking up with a partner,” the conflict resolution agreement stated. “While students were not required to answer these questions, some students reported feeling pressured to do so given that the activity was occurring in class. At least one student went into detail about their sexual encounters. Chadsey did nothing to stop this student from sharing this information with their peers. Chadsey did sometimes ask students to elaborate on the stories which they told.”

Chadsey had been issued a letter of expectation way back in 2007 reminding him to not talk to students about intimate personal matters or matters of a sexual nature.

According to the commission, Chadsey also mimicked foreign accents in front of his students to dramatize stories. This included Asian accents, despite having ESL students from Asia in his classes. On one occasion, he also mimicked physical ticks and stutters.

On February 10, 2020, the District gave Chadsey a letter of expectation reminding him to keep his communication with students professional, and directed him to complete a course on maintaining professional boundaries.

The report also noted that on three occasions between the summer of 1988 and the summer of 1993, Chadsey had physical encounters with recently graduated female students.

The investigation leading up to his 10 year ban began June 25, 2021 and Chadsey admitted that the facts in the conflict resolution agreement are true. He has agreed to not say or write anything that contradicts those facts.

Chadsey originally earned his professional certificate of qualification in 1988 and he surrendered it on April 2, 2021.
