The Clinton RCMP’s new detachment commander has settled into the South Cariboo lifestyle with ease.

When Cpl. Trevor Medernach moved to the community in February he found it to be a warm and welcoming place, and that welcome has made his transition easy.

“My last post was a lot smaller than Clinton, believe it or not, so this has been a lot more access to school and the community,” Medernach says. “I’ve driven through Clinton a million times over the years, but I have never dived into the community before.

“It’s a lot more interactive than I thought it would be. With it being so small I didn’t think there would be much in the way of community events, but it is actually a very interactive community with lots of events and traditions, like the Clinton May Ball.”

Medernach has 15 years of experience working with the RCMP, and has been stationed on Vancouver Island, up north, and most recently in the Shuswap. He was inspired to join the force by members of his family who had previously served and because it seemed like a good career opportunity out of university.Since becoming an officer, Medernach says he has come to enjoy getting to know each community he is posted in. Every town is different, which allows him to experience new things and get to know new people.

“It’s a unique job but it’s been a great one. Being part of a community has kind of grown on me,” he says. “I was pretty young when I joined, so doing the policing aspect was my main goal. The older I got and as my family grew I became a lot more involved in the communities.”

Clinton is Medernach’s first official command, though he served as an acting commanding officer for several months at one of his previous postings. He is excited to make his mark on the community and help keep it safe.

“Clinton is a very safe community. Our main concern is always the traffic and Highway 97; those are our day-to-day concerns,” he says. “Any kind of implementation of active traffic control would be the goal. We just need to slow people down. The winter roads around here, as I’ve learned, can be pretty rough.”

Medernach encourages anyone who has questions or concerns to reach out to him or the Clinton RCMP detachment at 250-459-2221.
