A man has been arrested after allegedly barricading himself inside a Surrey hotel and firing a gun.

Surrey Police conducted a wellness check at a hotel after receiving reports at about 10 p.m. Tuesday (June 24) night. The hotel is located in the 12400-block of King George Boulevard, according to a press release. The Turf Hotel, located at 12411 King George Blvd., appears to be the only hotel in that area.

Officers tried to get the man to come outside of the suite he was staying in, when they learned he had a firearm with him inside the hotel room and was barricading himself, the release noted.

The Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team responded as well, and evacuated other nearby guests from their rooms, the release continued. Just a couple hours later, at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, gunshots were heard coming from inside the man's hotel room. Police said the gunfire was directed towards the outside of the room.

Shortly after, just before 1 a.m., police were able to arrest the man with the assistance of a police dog.

The man remains in custody in hospital, where he was taken after the arrest.

The incident is still under investigation.
