Those living out their final days with care needs no longer need to book at spot at Hospice.

The North Okanagan Hospice Society has introduced a new way to support people at the end of life: the Hospice at Home pilot program.

The new service brings compassionate care directly into people’s homes, helping them live their final days with dignity, comfort with the support of loved ones around them.

For those with a life-limiting illness who wish to spend their final weeks at home, Hospice at Home offers professional medical care, emotional support, and personal assistance — all in a familiar and peaceful setting.

“This program is about honouring people’s wishes to be at home at the end of life,” said Megan Cox, executive director. “We’re here to make sure no one faces this journey alone, and that families feel supported every step of the way.”

A team of nurses, doctors, care aides, and social workers will work closely with the patient and their family to provide care tailored to their needs.

Nurses are available for home visits during the day and evening, and patients can reach them 24/7 via phone to help with symptom management or urgent needs.

Families are also supported with education, medication and equipment delivery, emotional and spiritual care, and practical help.

The service is for those who live within the Vernon area, have a serious illness with a prognosis of less than three months, and would prefer to pass away at home.

They must have a 24-hour live-in caregiver and internet access and be open to receiving care from the Hospice at Home team.

There is no cost for families during this pilot phase.

Anyone can refer someone to the program — whether it's a doctor, a family member, a caregiver, or the person themselves.

North Okanagan Hospice Society has been supporting individuals and families in Vernon with end-of-life care for over 30 years.

With the launch of Hospice at Home, it is extending that care into the homes of people who want to be surrounded by peace, comfort, and those they love most.
